He has overseen the largest reorganization of the House Committee structure in more than 40 years, merging or eliminating duplicative committees and replacing them with more flexible groups that can quickly adapt to advances in technology and culture. DiMasi has also taken steps to ensure the economic competitiveness of the Greater Boston region by sanctioning stem cell research and advancing reforms in the state's permitting process. Prior to being elected Speaker, DiMasi served as Senate Majority Leader from 2002 to 2004, as Majority Whip in 2001 and as Assistant Majority Whip from 1996 to 2000. He has chaired several committees, including the Committee on the Judiciary and the former Committee on Banks and Banking (now Financial Services). DiMasi has represented the 3rd Suffolk District since 1978. A proven leader in both the public and private sector, DiMasi entered private practice after graduating from Suffolk University Law School in 1971, and has served as Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney.
