Menino is set to be the longest serving mayor of the city of Boston. In his new term, Mayor Menino remains committed to issues of importance to the business community, including strengthening the k-12 education and developing the South Boston Waterfront. A champion for the communities he serves, Mayor Menino has earned the reputation for getting the job done. He was instrumental in bringing the 2004 Democratic National Convention to Boston, and in ensuring its successful execution. A strong advocate for the life sciences sector, Mayor Menino played a key role in Boston's winning bid for the National Biocontainment Laboratories at the Boston University Medical Center. Menino was first elected as mayor in November 1993, winning 64 percent of the vote. He went on to be re-elected to a second term without opposition in 1997, and won a third term in a landslide victory in 2001, prior to winning his fourth term in 2005 with more than 67 percent of the vote.
