Under his leadership, the Senate passed a health care bill that expanded access without imposing a payroll tax on businesses, and crafted an economic stimulus bill that aims to streamline the permitting process so that businesses can expand in the region. Recognizing an emerging opportunity for Greater Boston's life sciences industry, Travaglini was the driving force behind sanctioning stem cell research in the Commonwealth. First elected to the Senate in 1992, Travaglini has served in key leadership roles, including Senate Majority Whip, Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Local Affairs, Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Commerce and Labor, and Senate Vice-Chair of Ways and Means. Prior to joining the Senate, he represented Charlestown, the North End, the Waterfront and his hometown of East Boston on the Boston City Council, earning a reputation as a strong advocate for neighborhoods and the needs of his constituents.
