Senator Edward Kennedy United States Senate First elected to the United States Senate in 1962, Senator Edward M. Kennedy has been a staunch advocate for issues that benefit Massachusetts and keep businesses competitive. He has fought for health care reform, homeland security, restoring economic growth, and improving education. Kennedy was also instrumental in establishing the Children's Health Insurance Program in 1997 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, and he is currently a leader in efforts to amend Medicare. Re-elected seven times, Kennedy is the second most senior member of the Senate. He serves on the Judiciary Committee; the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee; and the Armed Services Committee. He is also a member of the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, a founder of the Congressional Friends of Ireland, and a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
